Superfoods: Medicine On Your Plate
“Ask your doctor if (fill in the name of the medicine) is right for you.” That phrase is at the end of every pharmaceutical commercial. But the question you should really be asking is
“Are superfoods right for me?”
And, unless you are allergic to any of them, the answer is “YES!”
Generally thought to be good for your health and possibly help with certain medical conditions, they empower your immune system with the high quality building blocks that the human body has depended on for 2 million years.
While many super foods have high levels of vitamin C, some also have harder to access ones like vitamin K. Some feature large amounts of potassium, trace minerals like zinc, important enzymes and high fiber content.
They also have their own nutritionally important high quality quantities of proteins, carbs and fats.
Their greatest advantage however, may lay in their anti-inflammatory properties, since systemic inflammation has been found to be a base cause of many diseases and aggravated physical conditions.
So, what are these superfoods? A short list includes fruits and berries, seaweeds, algae, vegetables, green leaves, herbs, nuts, cocoa and coconut meat/water. Of course there are others, each with their own superfood assets and benefits.
